I have long held that the primary definition of an artist is not so much that someone is skilled in a particular discipline, but that they see the world differently than other people. Photography is a practice that both provides a creative outlet and that helps me hone the skill of seeing the world from a different perspective.
Another creative skill that I have honed in recent years is the art of Bar-B-Que. I started off small, learning the art of slow and low smoking on a little back yard smoker. Slowly I have expanded the types and the amount of things that I can cook. In the past couple of years I even undertook a the project of building a large trailer mounted smoker. It continues to be a pastime that lets me express some creative juices as well as share the fruits of my labor with others.
Another outlet for me has been learning to play a variety of stringed instruments. My primary instrument is the guitar, but I have also taught myself to play the electric bass and the mandolin. While I am most certainly not a professional musician, I enjoy leading music in church, playing with friends or even just around the house.
